ASI ballot summary

There are two referendums on this year’s ASI ballot.

Referendum #1

The first referendum looks at correcting contradictory and conflicting information in the Associated Students, Inc. Bylaws. In an effort to correct those contradictions and comply with state laws for a non-profit corporation, ASI formed a committee that made the following changes, which require student approval before going into effect:

1. The number of voting members on the ASI Senate increased from 21 to 23. This would allow a faculty representative and the university president to be included in the Senate.

2. Powers to veto Senate actions were removed from the president and replaced with a Reconsideration process, meaning the president would have to ask the Senate to reconsider its actions.

3. A term limit has been set for the president, vice president and treasurer positions, which would restrict an executive from serving more than two terms.

4. The Senate can delegate limited authority to the Board of Control for specific items.

5. Approval processes for Chapter 1 of the Bylaws were changed. Instead of requiring approval by two-thirds of the student body, 60 percent student body approval would be required.

Voting YES would accept changes to Chapter 1 of the ASI Bylaws.

Voting NO would reject changes to Chapter 1 of the ASI Bylaws.

Referendum #2

The second item on the ballot is “Student Referendum on Smoke Free Campus,” Senate Resolution # 2013-11, which was approved by the ASI Senate on Dec. 4, 2012. This referendum would ask the student body to vote on whether a smoke-free campus policy should be implemented at Cal State Long Beach.

Voting YES on this referendum would result in a recommendation being made to the university president to make CSULB a smoke-free campus.

Voting NO on this referendum would not result in a recommendation being made to the university president to make CSULB a smoke-free campus.

Online elections begin Friday and continue through Wednesday.
