Students dance to encourage others, recruit for SRWC programs

The Flash Mob gives students a surprise dance in front of the SRWC Wednesday.

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center has passion in its pants, and it’s not afraid to show it.

The SRWC Plaza was unusually crowded yesterday as passers-by stopped to catch a glimpse of the flash mob dancing to LMFAO’s self-loving, hit song “Sexy and I Know It.”

A group of Cal State Long Beach students, along with Prospector Pete, performed choreography to the crowd of onlookers at 4 p.m.

The purpose of the Rec the Dance Floor event was to reach out to students and get them involved with the programs the SRWC offers, Larry Leong, SRWC outreach and special event planning intern, said.

“We’re trying something new,” Leong said. “With the Flash Mob, I hope people realize how fun the [SRWC] is.”

The event featured a special guest appearance by “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant Clarice Ordaz, who placed in the top 10 during season eight.

“I am a big fan of [the show],” Leong said. “I thought she would be the perfect person to assist me with this event.”

When Ordaz, who was a CSULB student before her stint on the show, was asked to come up with the choreography to “Sexy and I know It,” she did not hesitate to say yes, according to Leong.

“I just love CSULB. I’ve missed it,” Ordaz said. “It all just kind of came together.”

With lyrics such as, “Ahhh, girl look at that body… I-I-I work out,” the song choice seemed fitting, Ordaz said.

“I tried to make choreography that showed off that buff, macho-man side,” Ordaz said. “And since this is a college campus, I also threw in humorous hip thrusts, which are fun and easy to learn.”

In order for participants of the flash mob to learn the choreography before the day of the event, Leong posted a video of Ordaz teaching the choreography step-by-step on YouTube.

“Also, every Monday and Wednesday, I tried to recruit students inside the SRWC,” Leong said. “[We’d] go over the choreography together to make sure they felt comfortable.”
