Associated Students Inc. executive candidates John Haberstroh and Jonathon Bolin were found guilty of posting in non-posting locations during the Board of Elections ruling March 23.
Specifically, door hangers were placed on many classroom doors around campus.
The board ruled that the running mates were guilty and that presidential candidate Haberstroh and vice presidential candidate Bolin are not allowed to pass out any printed materials until April 4 at 8 a.m. Printed materials include fliers, buttons and stakes.
The run-off elections for the vice presidency and presidency end April 5 at midnight.
Presidential candidate Stephen Thomas and vice presidential candidate Diana Phan petitioned against Haberstroh and Bolin.
“As candidates, we are responsible for posting in locations we are allowed to and not posting in locations we are not allowed to,” Thomas said. “And we understand that we are responsible for our actions and we ask that regardless of how long [the door hangers] were up for – for that entire day they were up thousands of students saw the campaign material and thousands were affected one way or another.”
Under the elections handbook, candidates cannot post materials on buildings, sculptures, posts, railings, trees, traffic control signs, sidewalks, paved areas, utility poles, vehicles, in planted garden areas, newspaper racks or kiosks.
Haberstroh said he and Bolin interpreted posting as applying adhesive or pinning.
“We found that listed under the prohibited campaign activities, we saw some gray area and we took that liberty,” Haberstroh said. “But it is clear now that is a violation so I’m here to accept responsibility.”
Haberstroh said he and Bolin purchased 500 door hangers and placed them on various buildings on campus.
Bolin and Haberstroh have appealed to the ASI Judiciary for a lighter sentence.
The hearing will be held today.
um… who cares???!
ASI is like high school government.. no one REALLY cares except the people running!
So what if they put more fliers up?
