Illegal filming at Japanese Garden

A group was found filming at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden on Feb. 5 around 2:30 p.m., University Police Capt. Scott Brown said.

Employees at the garden told the group that they could not film without the proper permits and authorization, but they refused to leave until the University Police arrived.

It is unknown whether they were students or what they were filming, but they left with only a warning, Brown said.

Wallets taken from classroom

Three students reported their wallets stolen on Feb. 7 in Room 112 of the Fine Arts 3 building, Brown said. The class had stepped out between 1:15 p.m. and 1:35 p.m. and had returned to find the items missing. According to University Police, the suspect already used one of the student’s cards to purchase items.

Apple products stolen

A woman reported her iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro stolen on Feb. 8 around 7 p.m., Brown said.

The student had briefly stepped away from the bench area near the Beach Hut where her items were set on a table. When she turned back toward the table, she saw that a male suspect had grabbed her phone. She tried to follow the suspect, but lost him near the Psychology building, Brown said.

Once the woman returned to her table, she found that her MacBook was taken as well.

University Police said the two suspects might have been working together, to cause an initial distraction by taking her iPhone first and then her MacBook once she was further from the table, or that the case was two unfortunate crimes of opportunity.

The first suspect was described as a Black or Hispanic male in his 20s with a black and red backpack, Brown said.

A student reported her black and red Schwinn Mountain bike stolen on Feb. 6 before 4:40 p.m., Brown said.

According to Brown, the student found her bike missing from the quad area of the Molecular and Life Science Center, even though she had used a Kryptonite U-lock to secure her bike to the rack. The total estimated value is about $350.

A man reported his black and white Kent fixed-gear bicycle stolen from the LA 4 and LA 5 bike rack between 6:50 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. on Feb. 6, Brown said. The total estimated value was about $135.
