Students do push-ups for personal training lessons

Cal State Long Beach students Ron Le and Jenny Guerrero outworked 48 other contestants, placing first in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center’s second annual push-up contest.

Le, a junior kinesiology major, was the top male competitor with 100 push-ups.

“It feels good to win,” Le said.

Le is a personal trainer at 24-Hour Fitness but he didn’t think that guaranteed a victory.

“I didn’t think I could blow it out of the water,” Le said.

Le works out five days a week and practices Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He uses physical activity as a way to relax.

Unlike some of his competitors, who were dressed in workout clothing, Le competed in a T-shirt and jeans. He admitted that he wasn’t expecting to compete.

Le said he learned about the contest while waiting in the SRWC lobby and decided to give it a shot.

“If I was training for it, I know I could hit at least 115,” Le said.

Lead personal trainer for SRWC, Tony Nuñez, said the purpose of the competition was to create more awareness of SRWC events and to boost business.

“When you get more students in here, it allows them to ask more questions about personal training, group fitness and just get to know the trainers, so we have a couple of trainers here today to be counting and to get in touch with the staff,” Nuñez said. “And, hopefully, that will help build numbers as far as selling training sessions.”

All contestants were required to bend their elbows in a 90-degree angle and then extend their arms, pushing their bodies all the way up.

Once completely up, they were not allowed to remain in that position for more than two seconds before starting their next pushup.

Female competitors were permitted to do a modified pushup, while males were required to do regular push-ups.

The contest was open to all SRWC members.

First place winners for men and women won a free personal training session. Those placing second won a free T-shirt.

CSULB student Jenny Guerrero was the top female contestant with 70 pushups.
