Committee forming to search for new CLA dean

Gerry Riposa

The College of Liberal Arts is forming a search committee that will help find a replacement for Dean Gerry Riposa, but, as the committee is being formed, more than a dozen applicants have already applied, Provost Donald Para said.

Riposa made the announcement last spring that he would step down in June 2012, sparking rumors that he was being “forced out” by Para. But, both Riposa and the provost maintain they made the decision together.

According to Para, it is anticipated that finalists for the job will be on campus in February 2012, with a final decision being made in March 2012. If the search is successful, the new dean will replace Riposa sometime in July 2012.

All candidates will be evaluated first on the “minimum qualifications” listed in the job announcement, Para said. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are then evaluated for “preferred qualifications.”

After these candidates are chosen, the search committee will further evaluate the applicants, narrowing the group down to three to five candidates, Para said.

These final candidates will then come to Cal State Long Beach for two days of meetings and presentations.

The search committee will consist of eight members, Para said. The members will include five tenured CLA faculty elected by the CLA Faculty Council, one CSULB administrator selected by the Provost, one full-time CLA staff member elected by CLA staff and one student from CLA who will be elected by the CLA student council.

The Provost also has the option of appointing a community-at-large member, Para said referencing Academic Senate Policy.

CLA Faculty Council has already sent out a call for nominations to the committee and five faculty members will be selected within the next few weeks, Para said. Staff elections and student selections are currently underway.
