CSULB Earth Week to provide ideas for environmental actions

A variety of informative events about nature will be held on and off campus this week as part of Earth Week, which begins today and continues until Saturday.

Dating back to the 1970s, the purpose of the event is to educate Cal State Long Beach students, faculty and staff about the environment and what they can do to protect it, according to Jessica Young, Associated Students Inc. conservation commissioner.

“There are many ways to make a positive impact on the planet,” Young said in an email to the Daily 49er.

The highlight of the on-campus celebration is the two-day Environmental Awareness Fair, which will be held at the Speaker’s Platform on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the fair, campus and local organizations will be talking with students about what it truly means to “go green.”

The International House will host a movie screening on Wednesday night on “No Impact Man,” a film about a family that abandons their high consumption Fifth Avenue lifestyle and tries to live a year while making no net environmental impact.

Additional activities include a habitat restoration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Colorado Lagoon.

The lagoon is located blocks from the CSULB campus at 5119 E. Colorado St. It has been slowly restored and preserved because it is considered an important urban wetland in the community.

The lagoon, which is approximately half land area and half open salt-water area, recently underwent a Los Angeles County funded storm drain improvement project to discharge storm water into Marine Stadium.

Students are especially encouraged to take part in Earth Day on Friday.

“I’m doing trash pick up in a community a little north of here,” junior Monica Rochte said.

The weeklong events are sponsored by the ASI Conservation Commission and co-sponsored by other campus organizations.

Additional information about the event can be found at the Beach Pride Center on campus.
