Music technology expert Mike Gao spoke about new technologies for music production at a Student of Life Organization meeting in the University Student Union on Tuesday.
His album entitled “Sun Shadows” debuted on Tuesday as well.
The 26 year old created Vocal Beater, a smart phone application that allows beatboxing recordings to be instantly emailed as an MIDI file. The technology was downloadable for free on Tuesday to celebrate the release of his debut album.
Gao, a Southern California local and current professor at UC San Diego, brought his iPad and boombox to the event.
“Playing music in a visual way is like flying for me,” Gao said.
In addition, he previewed his soon-to-be-released iPhone application for playing chords.
“I think people are losing talent — especially once this application drops,” Gao joked.
He cited Jacques Attali’s book “Noise: The Political Economy of Music,” in which music is predicted to slowly lose its commodity value and become an autonomous self-pleasure.
However, Gao said he believes music production is changing with lesser emphasis on traditional instrumentation.
“Maybe music is moving away,” he said. “What people care about in music is changing.”
Gao has played at Low End Theory in Los Angeles and said he has surpassed his own expectations in the beats music field.
“My goal is to play out more, go to more places to play and have more fun with music,” he said. “I’m already happy making music I never imagined I could make.”
Gao concluded the discussion with a sample of his eclectic, electronic tunes. A speaker cover in the USU fell off at the impact of the sound of his music.
The musician and inventor has collaborated with the likes of Living Legends’ Luckyiam, Mestizo, TOKiMONSTA and Dumbfoundead.
