The Student Sustainability Task Force will host the Next Gen Mixer on Wednesday in the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden to inform students on topics like recycling, the campus farmers’ market and sustainable gardening.
The purpose of the eco-friendly event is to “create a forum for students to dialogue about sustainability issues in a relaxed environment, [where] they can exchange ideas, network with peers, faculty and staff, and members of the community,” said Tracy Terán, a development assistant at the Japanese Garden. “We are interested in getting students involved and informed about sustainability issues.”
During the mixer, students will have the opportunity to become informed on the latest trends and learn how others are thinking about issues such as sustainable food systems, recycling and re-use of materials, and sustainable design concepts.
Several tables will be set up to exhibit student project presentations. There will also be a one-hour session for students to mingle and learn about the projects that their peers have been working on.
Featured speakers will include: Long Beach Sustainability Coordinator Larry Rich, Co-Director of Green Long Beach and the Office of Sustainability Tiffany Chen, Marketing Supervisor of Whole Foods Long Beach Adrienne Peters, Founder of Long Beach Grows Donna Thomas, and Integrated Waste Management & Moving Services at Cal State Long Beach Jon Root.
The mixer will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Japanese Garden. Admission is free. Whole Foods will provide complimentary food and beverages.
