Associated Students Inc. passed resolutions Wednesday advocating for increased awareness of academic appeals, evacuation chairs in Brotman Hall and healthier food options on campus.
The academic appeals process is a way for students to petition for exception to academic policy usually used for general education substitutions and exceptions to the repeat/delete policy. The resolution advocating for awareness was unanimously passed in its third reading.
Changes made since the second reading included removal of implications that the process was not fast or simple enough, and emphasis on accessibility. Vice President Lucy Nguyen called it “one of the most complicated resolutions ever.”
The resolution fighting for the incorporation of evacuation chairs for the disabled also passed unanimously in its third reading. Senator Mark Rizk, one of the authors of the resolution, said he believed that the resolution was ready to be implemented.
“I think all the necessary changes have been made and I think it’s good to go,” Rizk said.
The text of the resolution has yet to clarify how the chairs will be funded.
Finally, the resolution advocating for healthier food options on campus and the providing of nutritional data upon request was also passed unanimously in its third reading. However, Senator Jacob Rice thought that certain statistics about obesity included in the resolution were irrelevant because they pertained to children.
“I would want to just remove those,” Rice said.
ASI Executive Director Richard Haller said he suggested the stats because obesity in youth can affect physical health in young adulthood. Ultimately, the resolution was passed as it was written.
Resolutions are discussed at weekly ASI meetings, which take place every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in University Student Union, Room 234.
