CSU students studying abroad in Japan to be evacuated

All Cal State University students studying abroad in Japan are being evacuated as risk of radiation exposure continues to grow.

According to Erik Fallis, CSU media relations specialist, the CSU chancellor’s office has decided to immediately pull all students studying abroad in Japan.

“We are suspending all the programs at this point,” Fallis said.

There were approximately 45 CSU students studying on exchange in Japan, including 10 Cal State Long Beach students.

As of Friday, many of these students were on planes headed back to the United States. The remainder will return this week.

None of the students were hurt in the earthquake.

According to Fallis, none of the students were located in Sendai, the area that was most severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami, or Fukushima, where explosions of nuclear power plants have released radiation into the air.

Most of the students were located in Tokyo, where there were reports of significant shaking, but no severe damage was done.

As safety concerns continue to increase, students planning to study abroad in Japan next semester or for the year have been asked to cancel their plans.

According to Fallis, there were more than 50 students enrolled in next year’s exchange programs.

“We feel it is best because of what has happened,” Fallis said.

The CSU system has a 45-year relationship of working with universities throughout Japan.

“We are going to have to evaluate all that has happened,” Fallis said. “We are watching and hoping that things will recover quickly. We hope to be back in Japan in the near future.”

Students who would like to donate to Japanese relief organizations can visit the Red Cross’ website or contribute to the Children in Emergency Fund for Save the Children.
