CSULB hosts Vietnamese students, entrepreneurs

Team Vietnam waves their native flag at the 2010 World Cup.

Cal State Long Beach played the role of the diplomat as it hosted Vietnam’s “future [business] leaders.”

Nine business students from Hanoi National Economics University (NEU) competed at the Students in Free Enterprise World Cup in the Anaheim Convention Center Oct. 12-14. They competed against 39 other countries, placing third in the first round.

The NEU students were treated to a buffet lunch at The Chart Room where College of Business Administration dean Michael Solt gave them and their faculty adviser CSULB souvenirs.

“This campus has been my favorite place here because I like the atmosphere where the people are friendly,” NEU student Thien Nguyen said. “There’s a museum, a stadium — and even the parking structure that makes it all convenient for students.”

The Vietnamese students got a chance to share some knowledge with their American counterparts as they presented interactive projects to Associated Business Students Organization Council (ABSOC) members.

“I really enjoyed having them over,” said ABSOC president Alejandro Lozano. “They are very bright and talented individuals. Their presentation inspired me to travel to Vietnam. I look forward to seeing all the other great things they will do in the future.”

The NEU students also attended a faculty mixer and visited the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. During their stay in California, they visited Disneyland, South Coast Plaza, Universal Studios Hollywood and downtown Long Beach.

The NEU students beat 12 teams to become SIFE Vietnam National Champions last July.

“These students are the future [business] leaders in their country,” said Dr. Hieu Nguyen, CSULB assistant professor of marketing.

At the SIFE international competition, each representative country was given 24 minutes to present their entrepreneurial projects that provide long-term solutions to help improve their nation.

“I was excited and proud to be a representative for team Vietnam,” said Tuan Dinh, NEU-SIFE president.

Some of the projects by NEU-SIFE students include educating children on entrepreneurship, using earthworms to get rid of waste products and produce fertilizer, and importing silk clothing.

According to a 2009-2010 annual report, NEU-SIFE has 67 active members who have dedicated 5,500 volunteer hours to five projects that have directly helped 758 people.

They have three ongoing projects that will help small restaurants with food hygiene, prisoners with re-entering the workforce and horticulture farmers with environmental and managerial solutions.

As first-time visitors to the U.S., the NEU SIFE students were fully accommodated by CSULB with food, rooming at the residence halls, transportation and sightseeing.

“They were blown away by all the resources we have available to us,” Delta Sigma Pi president April Arihara said.

CSULB has been assisting NEU in teaching pedagogy and curriculum building activities and in a cooperative program since 2006.
