Library to stay open all day, night during finals

When students think of finals week, too much caffeine and a complete lack of sleep usually come to mind. This semester, Cal State Long Beach students can enjoy that stressful week together, around the clock.

The library will be open 24 hours a day during finals week due to last semester’s successful trial run, President F. King Alexander announced at yesterday’s Associated Students Inc. meeting. The week before finals is currently under consideration, as well.

“At 4 a.m. on virtually every day, we had anywhere from 200 to 400 students in the library during finals week,” Alexander said.

Many students relied on the library’s resources, such as Internet and study rooms, to avoid distractions at home and complained to the administration that closing the library during finals week made studying difficult.

After noticing a growing demand for unlimited library hours on and around finals week, ASI, along with CSULB students, fought to keep the library open 24 hours.

“The library finally being open all hours is great,” said business major Brittany Arciniega. “I work a lot and the only time I have to study is late at night. This will really help me out.”

ASI also discussed smart-room technology — DVD, VCR, projector and computer equipment — to Liberal Arts buildings 2, 3 and 4 in the fall. Liberal Arts buildings 1 and 5 are also under consideration.

In addition, ASI Vice President Omar Gonzalez discussed the resolution to recognize the catastrophe in Haiti, urging ASI and students to come forward and take action, whether by donating or raising money or by volunteering.

Gonzalez said, “We want to help them out despite the hundreds or thousands of miles that separate us.”
