Associated Students Inc. hosted an event called Cookie for Cuts at the University Student Union Southwest Terrace on Tuesday, using a bake sale to rally students against budget cuts to higher education.
Drastic cuts from the state are forcing California State University administration to take measures such as furloughs, fee increases and cuts to course enrollment.
During the event, students directed on-camera messages to Sacramento, threw pie at a photo of the state Capitol and wrote comments on a poster board.
Students were able to express themselves and send direct messages to Sacramento.
Christina L. Esparza, ASI communications coordinator, said this is a way for students to find their voice.
“This is more than a fundraiser, but a statement to Sacramento,” said Miles Nevin, executive director of the California State Student Association, which helped facilitate bake sales for each campus.
Students of each campus passed out information about the issues. Revenues from the bake sale will be donated to the CSU to support the fight for higher education.
SaRice Freeman, a junior marketing major, said this is a stressful period for her as she has to put in more work hours to pay for school. Freeman is also involved with the ASI sports commission, which lost 10 percent of its funding.
Other students discussed how the budget cuts have affected them.
“It’s going to take me longer to graduate because I was not able to add a chemistry class,” said Jackie Mejias, a sophomore nursing major.
