Weather conditions caused a delay in the closure of Atherton Street’s westbound lane near Cal State Long Beach, General Manager of Parking and Transportation Services Mark Rudometkin said.
“The good thing is both lanes are still open,” Rudometkin said, adding that he met with Long Beach resident Daryl Supernaw to discuss a revised closure date, which is expected to be announced “either later [in the] day or the next few days.”
The closure, which is part of the Atherton Storm Drain Project, will run from Palo Verde Avenue to McNab Street across from the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
In a campuswide e-mail to students last week, the lane was expected to be closed for six months starting last Thursday.
Rudometkin said, however, “The plan is to be done by Jan. 15.”
“I’d rather say six months and be done in four,” he added. “[Jan. 15] is the goal — weather permitting.”
Rudometkin said the Sully-Miller Contracting Company will need just 14 days “to do trenching and put in a pipe” before covering up the ditch that was viewed as an eyesore and hazard by the community.
