Sorority hosts fundraiser for children’s hospital

Members from each of Cal State Long Beach’s sororities and fraternities will be strutting their stuff at Tri Delta’s fashion show, “Fashion for Life.”

A portion of the event’s proceeds from the small entry fee will go toward St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and takes place on Feb. 17 in the USU Ballrooms.

Participants will be walking down the runway, modeling top-of-the-line designer denim brands such as: True Religion, Rock and Republic, and Citizens. After the show, the designers will sell men and women’s jeans at discounted prices, in which a portion of the revenue will also go to St. Jude.

“We have multiple philanthropy events throughout the year but this is one where students can really get involved. It expands beyond just the Greek community,” said Tri Delta President Amanda Pallach.

Fashion for Life is an annual fundraiser that Tri Delta organizes. In 1999, Tri Delta formed a national partnership with St. Jude to help further its research, according to Pallach.

In 2006, Tri Delta made a commitment to support St. Jude in what they call a “10 in 10” campaign. The campaign is focused on raising $10 million in 10 years. Pallach said the funding is going toward building a new floor that will focus primarily on patient treatment and brain tumor research.

So far, Tri Delta nationally has reached $5.6 million of the $10 million dollar goal. For the 2008-09 year, CSULB’s chapter has raised more than $6,000, according to Pallach.

Tri Delta sisters and Greeks alike all get excited to help out with the event.

“I have people coming up to me asking how they can model or get involved all the time,” said model coordinator Andrea Cagney. “It really sparks the interest of people our age and the Greek community.”

It has almost become a privilege for models to be able to represent their fraternity or sorority in the show.

“I’m really excited to model this year since I didn’t get a chance to do it last year. All my girls are jealous,” said Veronica Rhoades, a model in the show for the Sigma Kappa sorority.

The Tri Delta sisters, in particular, look forward to putting on the show every year to help raise money for a worthy cause.

“We’re all really passionate about St. Jude. You see their commercials on television but it really doesn’t tell the story about how much these kids need fundraisers like this to help there cause,” Cagney said.
