Long Beach locals and artists came together at Sunday’s University by the Sea event to display their creativity.
Members of Circle Painting, an artist collective, created a large mural of circular shapes in different sizes and colors, inviting passers by to help in the creative process.
Long Beach’s Museum of Latin American Art had a booth where people could make fish prints. Volunteers from the museum smeared dead fish with blue paint to be used to make the prints.
The art deco architecture walking tour, lead by instructor John Thomas, began at the Lafayette Building on Linden Avenue. The class examined the different elements of art deco in that building, as well in surrounding buildings, such as the Metropolitan Art Museum.
Thomas said that the “fountain” look was thematic and a key element among the art deco buildings in the area. Flowing floral designs and curving waves in the architecture embodied the fountain look.
The mosaic mural workshop, held at Gallery Eleven Seven on Linden Avenue, attracted children and adults alike, and provided an activity that was what one attendee called “therapeutic.” The majority of the mosaics were made using multi colored ceramic tile pieces. There were three stations at which people could work on mosaic pieces.
